7. Yeadon in the 1950s
A 1950s view of Yeadon High Street, busy with delivery vehicles. The ornate white building in the centre was originally Yeadon Picture House which opened on Monday, August 3, 1925, with a showing of 'The Man Who Came Back' starring George O'Brian and Dorothy MacKaill. The silent film was accompanied by orchestral music by the Melody Quartet. Seat prices at that time were 4d and 6d in the arena and 9d on the balcony. It survived for many years as a cinema before becoming a Bingo Hall, before the building housed The Aviator pub. Photo: Leeds Libraries, www.leodis.net

This is an example of the temporary homes which were erected in the Yeadon area to provide accommodation for people working at the AVRO Company. MAP (Ministry of Aircraft Production) brought in many workers to boost production. AVRO Lancasters and AVRO Ansons were two of the types of Aircraft which were built in Yeadon.
